Toronto Life - August 2005
"24 Hours With Megan Follows" How the actor, who stars this month in Soulpepper's Fool for Love, would spend a single perfect day in Toronto on an unlimited budget I would start with brunch at La Palette (256 Augusta Ave., 416-929-4900)-a fantastic cappuccino ($3) and an omelette ($9). Afterward, my 13-year-old daughter, Lyla, and I would hang out in Kensington. She loves long, colourful skirts, so we'd stop by Courage My Love (14 Kensington Ave., 416-979-1992). I used to shop there when I was her age. Then I would go to Stillwater Spa (4 Avenue Rd., 416-926-2389) and have the warm stone pedicure ($85). My sister Edwina loves it, so I'd drag her along, as well as my daughter. I'd get my toes done in a fiery, deep red. I'd also go to Holt's (50 Bloor St. W., 416-922-2333) and buy some clothes. I love Diane von Furstenberg's dresses-either a wrap or a silk dress ($395 to $595). They're cut on the bias and fall nicely. For lunch, I'd have halibut and chips ($7.65) at Penrose Fish & Chips (600 Mount Pleasant Rd.,416-483-6800). It's a throwback to the '50s, with red vinyl booths. Then I'd poke my head into the Little Dollhouse Company (612 Mount Pleasant Rd., 416-489-7180), because I've always had a thing for dollhouses. It's something I share with my kids-Lyla, and Russell, who's 10. We're working on an old Victorian dollhouse we found at a thrift store in L.A., so we'd look for banisters ($6.25) and wallpaper ($4.50 per sheet). I would go to Waddington's auction house (111 Bathurst St., 416-504-9100) with my fiancé, Stuart Hughes, a founding member of Soulpepper, to buy furniture. We love Mission and Shaker chairs, Mennonite and Canadian primitive stuff. Then I'd head to Eight Elm Photo & Video (525 University Ave., 416-597-6638) and buy a lens for my Leica camera-the Tri-Elmar-M ($3,700). In L.A., where I live most of the time, I like to photograph urban environmentsthe juxtapositions of freeways and houses. I'd also pick up Saturday, the new Ian McEwan novel ($33.95, Nicholas Hoare, 45 Front St. E., 416-777-2665). I loved his last book, Atonement. I'd have dinner with Stuart at Canoe (TD Bank Tower, 66 Wellington St. W., 54th flr., 416-364-0054), ordering a vodka martini ($10), warmed goat cheese ($17) and Haldimand County lamb ($44). Then I'd see Coldplay at the Air Canada Centre with my kids ($213). ka-ching $4,628.35
